Campinas occupies an area of 801 km ² (309.267 mi ²) and has a population of approximately 1 million inhabitants, distributed in four districts, namely Joaquim Egídio, Sousas, Barão Geraldo and Nova Aparecida, in addition to hundreds of neighborhoods. The city is an economic and social powerhouse especially due to its hard working population who has driven the city´s expansion, making Campinas one of the main metropolitan hubs in the Sao Paulo state region, an area comprised of 19 cities and a population estimated at 2,330,000 inhabitants. Campinas makes up 6.31% of the State's population.

Taquaral Lagoon
This is Campinas´ most famous park and together with Largo do Café (Coffee Square) and Praça Arautos da Paz (Heralds of Peace Square) you will find the city´s main landmarks and attractions. At this park you can ride in one of the four electric streetcars that pass through the 3 km railway line, visit the acoustic shell, take a paddle boat ride in the lagoon and enjoy an exact replica of the Annunciation Caravel that brought the Portuguese sea explorer Pedro Alvares Cabral to Brazilian lands, and wrap it all up by enjoying a musical dancing waters show.
Jequitiba Grove
The Jequitiba Forest is one of the largest and oldest leisure areas in the city of Campinas, visited annually by approximately 1 million people. Jequitiba is a 10-hectare native forest reserve with several species of plants and a zoo with 300 specimens of birds, reptiles and mammals (such as lions, tigers, maned wolfs, bush dogs, blue macaw, meerkats, hippopotamus, jaguars, among others), a race track, a kids train ride, kiosks, snack bars and a playground.
Natural History Museum
The Museum of Natural History receives 100,000 visitors annually and it aims to spread knowledge about fauna and flora and to promote conservation, as well as develop environmental education programs. The Museum has a collection of over 5,000 pieces, including mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, insects and invertebrates. The Municipal Aquarium and the House of Interesting Animals are attached attractions to the Natural History Museum.
Municipal Aquarium
At the Aquarium visitors find approximately 200 species of live animals such as anemones, sea cypress, spider crabs, clown shrimps, scorpions, starfish, seahorses, nurse sharks, lion fish, pufferfish, red ear turtles, corals, boa constrictors and rattlesnakes.
Municipal Observatory
In 1977 the Astronomical Station of Campinas was the first municipal observatory of Brazil. The station has three telescopes and the largest is the American model Cassegrain with 600mm of aperture, installed under a motorized dome. It also houses the country's largest astrographer (photographic telescope used in astrophotography). Observation sessions are often combined with cultural events.
Municipal Market
In its 143 stalls it is possible to find a variety of products such as vegetables, fruits, grains, spices, flowers, food, fish, herbs and delicatessen in general. It was listed as historical and cultural heritage of the city of Campinas in the year 1982.
